Bengaluru : The Zonal Workshop on Legal Service Activities organized by University Law College and Dept. of Studies in law in association with Karnataka State Legal Services Authority which was held on 18th, June 2022 at H N Auditorium in Jnanabharthi Campus.
The main objective of this workshop is to provide insights on procedural aspects of free legal aid which is guaranteed under the Constitution of India.
The Workshop was graced by Hon’ble Mr. Justice B Veerappa, High Court Judge of Karnataka and Executive Chairman of Karnataka State Legal Services Authority and Prof. Dr. Cynthia Menezes, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Banglore University. Member Secretary- KSLSA (Karnataka State Legal Services Authority ) Mr.H .Shasidhara Shetty .
The hon’ble dignitaries were the Chief Guests of the Zonal Workshop.
The program was presided by the esteemed presence of Prof. Dr. Suresh V. Nadagoudar, Principal, Chairman and Dean, University Law College and Dept. of Studies in law, Bangalore Universit; Prof. Dr. V. Sudesh, Formal Principal and Dean, University Law College and Dept. of Studies in law, Bangalore University; Prof. Dr. N Dasharath, Former Chairman and Dean, University Law College and Dept. of Studies in law, Bangalore University; Dr. Satish Gowda N, Associate Professor, University Law College and Dept. of Studies in law, Bangalore University and Coordinator, University Law College, Legal Services Clinic.
The program commenced with the welcome address by Dr. Satish Gowda N, the coordinator of this Workshop.
The inaugural address was rendered by Hon’ble Mr. Justice B Veerappa, who emphasized upon the importance of the hassle-free Legal System and mentioned that Justice P N Bhagawati, who introduced legal service in 1991 with an intention to provide free access to justice. He appreciated University Law College for conducting Legal Service Program at Kommagatta Village.
Hon’ble Justice also emphasized that bookish knowledge is not enough for the law students and they require practical experiences which can be attained through engagement in public activities. Justice also gave a clarion call that “humanity is the only caste” and urged people to raise above caste differences and contribute towards the betterment of societies. Hon’ble Justice also proposed an idea to establish an organization like NCC and NSS to provide legal services to the poor and needy and also urged the teaching fraternity to assess the students based on their service provided.
The chief guest, Prof. Dr. Cynthia Menezes emphasized on bringing about legal awareness in the society. She also mentioned about the teacher’s potential to bring about societal change through their approach towards the students. She also urged the legal fraternity to take note of the problem of child marriage and work towards finding a meaningful solution to this social evil.
Prof. Dr. Suresh V. Nadagoudar rendered the Presidential address and stated that Legal Aid is an opportunity to serve the poor people of the society. He also stressed upon raising voice against corruption which is a cancer to the society.
